What is an autoimmune disease?
Well… This is the way it works. You have a system inside your body that helps so you don’t get sick and protects you against germs and other nasty stuff. This is called the immune system. So, at the very core of this very complex immune system, it is able to know the difference of what is apart of your body and what is not (what should be there and is you and what shouldn’t be there)… A problem can a cure when the system can no longer tell the difference between good and evil (good and bad cells in your body of course!) and will start to build what are called “Autoantibodies” (Auh-toe-an-tie-baw-dees). These autoantibodies go around and attack the normal cells by accident.
Meanwhile, there are these really cool cells called “regulatory T cells” are supposed to be maintaining your immune system and making sure it stays healthy. These regulatory T cells ALSO stop doing their job… So now, not only is your immune system attacking itself, but the guy who’s supposed to be making it stop is asleep at the wheel!
This is called “Autoimmune Disease”
